I'm Mike, an integrative relational counsellor drawing on pluralistic philosophy.
I believe counselling is about creating a space where you can feel heard, understood and accepted for who you are. Rather than believing that a one-size-fits-all approach works, I draw on different therapeutic approaches and work collaboratively with you to understand what feels most helpful for you as an individual.
I work relationally, drawing from Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, Gestalt and CBT approaches. I take the time to get to know you and understand how you experience the world, rather than rushing to decide what needs to change.
I won't tell you what you should or shouldn't do, or try to rescue you from what you're feeling. Instead, I'll walk alongside you on your journey as we explore your experiences together, at a pace that feels comfortable for you. My hope would be to build a deeper understanding of yourself, explore different ways of responding and find your own way towards change.
I've worked with children, young people and adults across a range of settings, including schools, charity services and residential care. I've supported people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, emotional dysregulation, self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
This work has taught me the importance of meeting each person as a unique individual, without judgement or assumptions. It has also reinforced my belief that people are more than the difficulties they may be experiencing.
My Qualifications
BA (Hons) Counselling and Therapeutic Practice — University of South Wales — Upper Second Class (2:1)
I believe that meaningful change begins when we are able to stop fighting against those parts of ourselves that we find most difficult. We can often spend a lot of our energy judging, rejecting or feeling ashamed of parts of who we are, and this can make it harder to understand what we are actually experiencing.
For me, acceptance doesn't mean that we have to like everything about ourselves or give up on wanting things to be different. Instead, it's about being able to look at ourselves with enough compassion and curiosity to understand what is there, rather than immediately trying to push it away.
I believe that developing this deeper connection with ourselves can create the space to make choices about what we would like to change, helping us to move forward.
